Same day crown and bridges Brisbane

Same day Dental crowns and bridges are a more permanent solution to dental restorations and cosmetic dental needs. They are custom-made to fit your teeth, replacing the natural surface of the tooth to give extra strength to teeth that have been weakened by extensive fillings, as a repair to broken and chipped teeth, and as an effective cosmetic improvement to the appearance of misshaped and discoloured teeth.

Dental crowns are a more permanent solution to dental restorations and cosmetic dental needs. They are custom-made to fit your teeth, replacing the natural surface of the tooth to give extra strength to teeth that have been weakened by extensive fillings, as a repair to broken and chipped teeth, and as an effective cosmetic improvement to the appearance of misshaped and discoloured teeth.

Heritage Dental Group’s experienced dentists will undertake a comprehensive assessment of your teeth and discuss the restorative options that will provide the best solutions to your cosmetic and dental restorative needs. We are among Brisbane’s most experienced providers of dental implants and dental crowns, and our expertise in more extensive and permanent dental restorations means that we are more than able to help you restore your natural teeth to their former glory, or to give you the dream smile you’ve always wanted.

What are dental crowns?

When the structural integrity of a tooth has been severely compromised by root canal therapy, decay, or trauma, dental crowns are an effective solution. They are also a suitable, more permanent option for improving the cosmetic appearance of teeth, as they are custom-made to fit the individual teeth. Gaps where teeth are missing can be closed with a combination of dental implants, bridges and crowns, so the function and beauty of your smile can be restored.

Crowns are used to completely cover (cap) damaged teeth, and fully encase all of the visible part of the tooth. A complete prosthetic crown can also be placed over an implant to give the appearance of a real tooth. Crowns are a permanent prosthetic implant, and this means that you and your dentist must thoroughly assess your needs to determine whether they are suitable for you, but they do provide the highest standard of restoration available for serious dental issues.

Crowns may be composed of a number of different materials, including porcelain and ceramic (which are used to match the natural colour of your teeth), gold and metal alloys, resin, and acrylic. The different materials and methods available for forming crowns all have particular advantages and benefits, and choosing the right combination is based on your dentist’s comprehensive assessment and recommendations.

Why you might need dental crowns

There are many reasons why both adult and children might need dental crowns:

  • To strengthen teeth that have been broken or cracked, by holding them together
  • To support teeth that have had had root canals or a large fillings that make up half the tooth or more
  • To cover teeth that have parts missing, as in cracked tooth syndrome or broken cusps
  • To restore teeth that have been gradually and severely worn down
  • To cosmetically improve teeth that are misshaped or discoloured
  • To provide a prosthetic for a dental implant, or support a dental bridge
  • To save children’s teeth that are badly decayed, or as a preventative measure for those at a high risk of decay

While a traditional crown covers the entire tooth, your dentist may recommend the use of inlays or onlays for areas that only require partial coverage, or where the more extensive work involved in fitting a full crown isn’t necessary. Partial crowns are a more conservative measure, as less of the tooth structure needs to be removed to fit them, but your dentist will provide you with complete advice and sound recommendations about which method is appropriate to achieve the results you want.

How we apply same day dental crowns?

Generally, you will need one appointment with your dentist to have dental crowns fitted.

The first appointment involves examining and preparing your teeth. Your dentist will determine which materials and methods are most appropriate for your individual needs, and what results you can expect to see following the procedure. The cost of dental crowns is determined by a number of factors, and your dentist will thoroughly explain these options to you before your work begins. During the first appointment:

  • Your dentist may take x-rays of your teeth and the surrounding bone. If there is extensive decay or a risk of infection or further damage to the teeth, you may require a root canal treatment prior to receiving the crowns
  • The teeth are then prepared for the crown. This involves reshaping the teeth by filing down the top and sides to make space for the crown to be placed, or filling out some areas with restorative materials in order to support the crown
  • After preparing the tooth, your dentist will scan your teeth, design your crown, mill the tooth on site while you are waiting.
  • Once the crown is ready, crown will be glued in to your mouth.

After your permanent crowns are fitted, your dentist will give you advice and make recommendations on caring for your new, full smile.

How to care for dental crowns?

Dental crowns will last a long time, generally from 10-25 years, or even the rest of your life. However, how successful they are does depend on a number of factors: crowns do not eliminate your risk of cavities, and they can be broken or fall out if they aren’t properly cared for.

Your dentist during your regular check up appointments will give you advice about lifestyle habits that will help you to maintain your crowns, including:

  • Proper oral hygiene, including regular brushing and flossing to prevent cavities
  • Regular dental check-up and clean
  • Avoiding certain foods that are particularly sticky or hard, and have the potential to dislodge or break the crowns

There may be individual factors important in caring for your crowns, including:

  • The amount of stress placed on them, through problems like grinding, clenching, and heavy biting and chewing
  • Habits like biting your fingernails, or using your teeth for things other than eating (like opening packets!)
