What causes Trigeminal Neuralgia?

It is a chronic pain condition that affects the trigeminal nerve, which is one of the main nerves that provides sensation to the face.

It is caused by blood vessels compressing the trigeminal nerve. Treatment options include medication and surgery.

What are the symptoms?

It is characterized by sudden, severe, and recurrent episodes of facial pain that can last for a few seconds to a few minutes.

The pain is usually described as sharp, stabbing, or electric shock-like, and it can be triggered by activities such as talking, eating, or brushing teeth.

How is it related to your dental health?

Trigeminal neuralgia can make it seem like you are having dental pain that can feel similar to tooth decay or nerve pain while the dentist may look and find no issues with your teeth.

Certain oral habits such as grinding teeth or clenching jaw can trigger the pain attacks in people who have Trigeminal Neuralgia.

In general, it is not a tooth problem but if you have any dental issues or oral habits that may be contributing to the pain, your dentist or oral surgeon may be able to help manage it.

It’s also important to consult a neurologist or a pain specialist for proper diagnosis and treatment.
