CHILDREN’S DENTIST INDOOROOPILLY
Teaching children good oral hygiene from an early age
Your local dentist is here to help you maintain a healthy smile. Good oral hygiene is an integral part of children’s oral health. Starting early is the key to proper oral hygiene habits. As soon as your child turns one, book a dental appointment to see a dentist. This dental check-up appointment is child’s first visit to the dental practice, meeting dentist, sitting in the dental chair, get to have a dental experience. In this appointment dentist will count teeth with your child, take pictures of teeth and show your child how to brush teeth.
WHEN SHOULD MY CHILD FIRST SEE THE DENTIST?
It is recommended that a child should visit a dentist when the first tooth appears or on the first birthday. We sometimes think this is too early as your child may not have many teeth, but this visit is all about becoming familiar with the dentist, dental surgery environment and gives the dentist and parents opportunity to discuss early childhood dental problems, brushing techniques and effect of eating & drinking habits on teeth.
SOME STEPS TO KEEP YOUR CHILD’S TEETH AND GUMS HEALTHY:
REGULAR DENTAL CHECK-UPS
Book your child’s first dental check-up as soon as they turn one. First dental visit is all about getting to know the dentist and dental staff, counting teeth, showing how to brush and gives parents an opportunity to discuss early childhood dental problems, brushing teeth and effects of eating and drinking habits on teeth.
BRUSHING TEETH REGULARLY
Using soft toothbrush twice a day is important to clean your child’s teeth. Make sure to clean your child’s teeth before bed. Use a small toothbrush which can clean all the teeth especially one at the back.
AVOIDING SWEET ACIDIC DRINKS
Water is best for hydration. Keep kids away from soft drinks, bottled fruit juices and acidic sweet drinks. Minimize the intake of these drinks and make sure your child drinks water or clean teeth after consuming these drinks.
CHOOSING HEALTHY SNACKS
Always use fresh fruit, vegetables, nuts, or homemade snacks. Most of the snacks available in the market for kid’s lunch boxes contain sugar. Please read the labels while buying packed highly processed snacks. Your child will get used to eating what you give them so choose wisely.
WEAR A MOUTHGUARD
Every week we see few emergencies with broken cracked tooth. Wearing a mouth guard during training and games saves your child’s teeth from injury. If your child is doing martial arts like boxing, he/she should wear a mouth guard too.
CLEANING IN-BETWEEN TEETH
As soon as your child’s teeth started touching each other they should start cleaning in-between teeth as well. Till the age of 8-9 years old, your child may need your help brushing or flossing their teeth, but once they get confident and gets into the routine, they will start doing it on daily basis. Your child can use floss or specially made flossers to clean in-between teeth. These are available from most of the pharmacies now.
FISSURE SEALANTS
Fissure sealants are a safe and painless way of protecting your children’s teeth from tooth decay. Sealants used in conjunction with a comprehensive dental care routine that includes proper brushing, flossing, fluoride treatments and a healthy diet, helps maintain dental health.
