WHAT IS DENTAL HEALTH WEEK?

Dental Health Week is the Australian Dental Association’s yearly campaign to educate Australians on the importance of good oral health and how to effectively look after their oral health. This years Dental Health Week will be from 2nd-8th August 2o21.

DENTAL HEALTH WEEK 2021 CAMPAIGN

The 2021 campaign focuses on the importance of taking steps to care for your teeth and gums to help you to keep your teeth and smile for life. The ADA’s main oral health messages and the four key messages of the 2021 DHW campaign aim to reinforce the importance of maintaining good oral health to keep your teeth for life:

•    Brush teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste.
•    Clean between your teeth daily using floss or interdental brushes.
•    Eat a healthy, balanced diet and limit added sugar intake.
•    Visit the dentist regularly for check-ups and preventive care.

Some statistics from Australia’s Oral Health Tracker:
•     75% adults rarely or never floss or clean between their teeth.
•     1 in 5 adults brush only once per day.
•     39% of parents report their children drink 2 – 5 soft drinks per week.
•     2 in 3 adults usually visit the dentist for a problem rather than a regular check-up.
•     47% of adults (18+ years) consume too much sugar.

BRUSHING YOUR TEETH

Following a proper routine is a great way to remain consistent when brushing to ensure all surfaces of your teeth are cleaned.

  • Use a soft bristle toothbrush
  • Always brush gently in circular motion tilting your toothbrush at 45-degree angle towards the gums.
  • Gently brush inside, outside and chewing surfaces of the teeth.
  • Brush gently and softly, if you apply too much pressure while brushing, this can cause your gums to recede and can damage the white tooth enamel.
  • once finished brushing, spit out the excess tooth paste but do not rinse your mouth with water. This leaves a thin layer of toothpaste on your teeth which protects your teeth.
  • Remember to brush your tongue. Brushing and cleaning the tongue can reduce the bacteria present which can help with bad breath known as Halitosis.
  • Replace your toothbrush or toothbrush head on the electric toothbrush every 3 months.
  • Brush at least for 2 minutes twice a day.

FLOSSING YOUR TEETH

Indooroopilly Dental Clinic

To look after the health of your teeth and gums, it is recommended to clean in-between your teeth with floss or interdental brushes. No matter how well you brush your teeth, the toothbrush bristles don’t reach in-between surfaces of the teeth to remove bacteria, plaque and food debris.

  • Starting with about 18 inches/45 cm of floss, wind most of the floss around each middle finger, leaving an inch or two 3-5 cm of floss to work with
  • Holding the floss in-between your thumbs and index fingers, slide it gently up-and-down between your teeth
  • Gently curve the floss around the base of each tooth, making sure you go beneath the gum line.
  • Never snap or force the floss, as this may cut or bruise delicate gum tissue
  • Use clean sections of floss as you move from tooth to tooth
  • To remove the floss, use the same back-and-forth motion to bring the floss up and away from the teeth
