Wisdom Teeth: Problems and Solutions
For many people, the arrival of wisdom teeth cause no problems or concerns. However, these third molars can bring couple of problems. From pain and discomfort to potential oral health issues, wisdom teeth can cause a variety of issues that may require dental treatment. At your dental appointment, dentist will examine your teeth and mouth. If dentist cannot see your wisdom teeth inside your mouth because they are still under the gums, your dentist may ask to take a x-ray. This big x-ray is known as an orthopantomogram (OPG) and displays all your teeth (erupted and unerupted). In this blog, we will explore the common problems associated with wisdom teeth and discuss potential solutions.
What are Wisdom Teeth?
Wisdom teeth, also known as third molars, are the last set of molars to emerge in the back of the mouth. They typically appear between the ages of 17 and 25, although they can emerge earlier or later in some cases. While some people have no issues, others may experience pain, discomfort, and other problems.
Common Problems Associated with Wisdom Teeth:
Impaction: One of the most common problems associated with wisdom teeth is impaction. This occurs when the wisdom teeth do not have enough room to emerge properly and become trapped beneath the gum line. Impacted wisdom teeth can cause pain, swelling, and infection.
Crowding: Wisdom teeth can also cause crowding in the mouth, pushing the other teeth out of alignment. This can lead to bite problems, misalignment, and difficulty cleaning between the teeth.
Infection: Impacted wisdom teeth can create pockets of bacteria around the gum line, increasing the risk of infection. This can lead to pain, swelling, and even more serious oral health issues if left untreated.
Damage to Surrounding Teeth: In some cases, wisdom teeth can grow in at an angle, pressing against the neighbouring teeth. This can cause damage to the adjacent teeth, leading to decay, infection, and other problems.
Solutions for Wisdom Teeth Problems:
Extraction: In many cases, the best solution for problematic wisdom teeth is extraction. This involves removing the wisdom teeth surgically to prevent further problems and alleviate pain and discomfort.
Antibiotics: If a wisdom tooth is impacted and infected, your dentist may prescribe antibiotics to help clear up the infection before performing an extraction.
Pain Management: In the meantime, over-the-counter pain medications such as ibuprofen or Panadol can help to alleviate pain and discomfort associated with wisdom teeth. Rinsing your mouth with warm, salty water or chlorhexidine mouthwash can help when the area around the wisdom tooth is infected.
Regular Dental Check-ups: Regular dental check-ups are essential for monitoring the development of teeth and addressing any problems early on.
Tips for keeping your wisdom teeth clean:
It is important to keep the area around wisdom clean when they are coming through the gums. If you are not cleaning them properly, bacteria can cause gums around the partially erupted teeth inflamed resulting in pain and discomfort.
Brush and floss your teeth thoroughly. Use a toothbrush with small head to reach all the way around to last teeth.
Use an antiseptic mouthwash to reduce bacteria and prevent infections.
While not everyone experiences discomfort with their wisdom teeth, it’s essential to be aware of the potential issues and seek treatment if necessary.
